His career best play was when he reached the score of 25 points in the 5th game of the 1993 NBA Finals, and he showed all the qualities in that season to become a great player. Unfortunately, that was his only success in the NBA, since in the following years, he was in the clasps of substance abuse, until by 1997, he was out of a roster spot.

Only in the US Open 1998 and 2000 had he managed to advance that far in the Grand Slam. In the 2002 Australian Open, the top six seeds had already been knocked out in the first few rounds, and Johansson faced only three of the ranked players, the most notable being Marat Safin. He was the silver medallist in the doubles. His run to the 2005 Wimbledon semi-final was his only other notable match in such an advanced level in his career. He declared his retirement in June, 2009.

When it comes to college football of West Coast, most people think of USC. Their uniform is quite extraordinary. Their cardinal and gold colour scheme is one of the most easily recognizable in the sport. It is trendy and edgy, and at the same time, it is stylish and classic, too. The jersey has looked this way since the years of John McKay, who, as the head coach of the team, was part of its glorious history. During a brief period from 1980s to 1990s, the jerseys sported a three-stripe pattern above the top of each sleeve, and had red facemasks in place of the traditional grey ones. The style was changed back, and has remained the same since then. Interestingly, the team even climbed back to its top position after this change.

The Seminoles have a traditional look, with their garnet and gold uniform which has remained unchanged for decades. What makes the uniform stand apart in the crowd is the helmet, covered with the iconic spear. The elaborately designed helmets have garnet-and-gold arrows which make them one of the fiercest-looking helmets among all jerseys of football, be it college standard or professional. They date back to as far back as 1976. The gold pants have a ‘Nole logo, which is an additional touch that looks remarkably good. Apart from the name of the team, the jersey, too, pays homage to the Seminole Tribe of Florida with the incorporation of the Native American feather design that lines the jersey’s collar, as well as the bottom of the sleeves.

The grey and scarlet colour combination is something is likely never to go out of fashion. It is smart and fresh. There is a recognizable pattern along the sides of the pants and the arms. The palindromic pattern consists of five stripes that run in black-white-red-white-black. The uniform which was first worn under former head coach Woody Hayes is well-known in the college football world. The helmets, worn since 1968, are simple to look at, but this simplicity adds to the charm, and the additional Buckeye leaf stickers make the uniform special, especially because of the lids of the star players that they festoon every year. Aligned with Nike, the Buckeyes have made some recent alterations and additions, but, none of them has been ground-breaking enough to last.

The uniqueness of the uniform of the Texan team is its simplicity, with a minimalistic colour scheme of white and burnt orange. The orange on white (or vice versa) colours of the jersey adds a sense of dignity and classiness to it. Interestingly, it is this no-frills design of the jersey along with the classy white helmet that makes it recognizable. The mascot of the team, which is incorporated in the uniform in a quietly distinguished manner, is a silhouette of a horned bull, which is perfectly symmetrical, and in no need of an additional pair of eyes or a snout, as it forms the basis of the iconic hand gestures of “Hook ‘Em Horns.” Some interesting alterations to the jersey in recent years have been gold trims around the lettering or helmets featuring the player numbers.

The Huskers’ uniform is a vivid combination of red and white. The timeless uniform consists of red pants with white stripes, combined with red shoulder stripes on the white tops. One of the main features of the uniform is the helmet, which is white in colour with crimson stripes and a capital N, as well as the red face mask. It was introduced in the year 1970. The overall combination is quite simple yet very eye-catching, and the tradition and history which is associated with the uniform makes it all the more iconic. There are subtle changes that are brought time and again to the uniform, and alternative uniforms are often given a chance such as the new Adidas Red Rising uniform. But, no one really messes with the helmet or the overall colour scheme.

The Bulldogs have not messed with their jersey much, even though years have passed. It is a simple uniform that has held its charm and tradition. The red helmet, red top and silver pants are almost exactly the same as the combination worn during the early 1980s. The plain red top has an appeal of its own that has lasted for decades. The silver britches have been worn for 34 years, now, and the stripes of red, white and black on either side of the pants add to the timelessness of the uniform. The iconic oval G was inspired by the Green Bay Packers. Head coach Vince Dooley asked for the permission to redesign it in 1964 for the Bulldogs. The redesigned version was so well done that the Packers modelled their own G on the helmet after the Bulldogs’.

The Nittany Lions have held on to the classic colour scheme of navy blue and white, with the helmet that is predominantly white and has a blue stripe running down the middle of the helmet. It essentially reflects the offensive gameplay that the team has. It is simple and yet uber-cool. Over the years, the uniform has undergone some slight changes, such as the addition of numbers to the helmets, or that of the names to the backs of the uniforms. The neckline or arms of the tops are occasionally changed, too. However, the true essence of the uniform’s colour pattern is never changed. Though many players have expressed their desire to see a change in the uniform, but the true Penn State fans are likely to go into an uproar mode if that ever happens.

This classic maize-and-blue-combination jersey has an age old appeal to it. The bright maize pants, teamed with the deep blue top with the numbers popping out, was worn by the team for 21 seasons during 1969-1989 under head coach Bo Schembechler. But, the most remarkable part of the uniform is the helmet. This iconic lid is often considered the best in the history of college football. It was chosen in 1938 by Fritz Crisler, the head coach at that time, who chose the winged helmet more for practical reasons than as a stylistic option. It was an excellent choice to help halfbacks find receivers downfield. Yet, today, it is this winged pattern, created by Ann Arbor and perfected over the years, that has set a standard that other schools try to follow.

The thread of the Tides has remained almost the same since the time of head coach Bear Bryant, with the colour scheme being crimson and white. While most of the other teams have toyed with their designs, the uniform of the Tides has remained virtually the same, with the iconic white pants and crimson or white top, alongside a helmet that is crimson in colour and has a grey facemask. The helmet features the number of the player in white on the side. This is an old style and is a reminder of the days of non-soccer style placekickers and goalposts shaped like H. The style might be used by countless other schools, but, the only one that comes to the minds of the football fans and the followers of college sports is that of Alabama.

The uniform of the Notre Dame is recognizable even to the nations who do not play or follow football. The jerseys have changed colours quite a few times, and though the green one is pretty amazing, the most popular one is, without a doubt, the mid-night blue top with pants of a gold hue. The ND logos add a special touch to the tops without making it too busy. But, the most identifiable part of the uniform is the helmet. The golden lid is what the team is nicknamed after. These helmets, Golden Domes, are a coloured to take after the famous Golden Dome on top of the university’s Main Administrative Building. In the past few years, Adidas got carried away a bit too far with designs of the alternatives. In July 2014, the team officially shifted to Under Armour as uniform providers.

There are many other college football teams that have very catchy uniforms, with a combination of great colour schemes on the jerseys and striking helmets. They are all different from each other, and each stands out in a different way. But, one thing that is common among all of them is that they mostly follow a simplistic and classic look. The no frills designs of the uniforms offer a clean look that is dignified, and despite some regular changes that the teams often bring to their uniforms, they mostly remain loyal to the original style. The helmets, too, play an imperative role in making each college football jersey iconic and unique.
