- 11Why the stadium feels larger than 70,240
SoFi Stadium holds 70,240 spectators in its standard football configuration. The venue itself rounds that to “approximately 70,000” and says it can expand to 100,000 for selected events.
Those figures describe different layouts, not a contradiction. An NFL game, a concert with floor admission and a FIFA soccer match use the same building in very different ways.
SoFi Stadium capacity at a glance
| Event or inventory | Capacity | What the number means |
|---|---|---|
| Standard NFL football | 70,240 | Common permanent-seat reference figure |
| Venue’s official wording | Approximately 70,000 | Rounded standard capacity |
| Expandable maximum | Up to 100,000 | Event-specific seats and admission, not regular NFL inventory |
| Large concert | Often 60,000–80,000+ | Depends heavily on stage and floor layout |
| 2026 World Cup gross venue profile | 70,492 | Physical/gross tournament reference |
| 2026 World Cup net ticket inventory | 52,497 | Sellable seats after competition operations; subject to change |
The most useful answer for a Rams or Chargers game is 70,240. Use 100,000 only when discussing the design’s maximum expansion, and use the event’s live seating chart when buying a ticket.
NFL capacity for Rams and Chargers games
The Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers share SoFi Stadium. In a normal NFL setup, the football field sits within the lowest seating bowl and the venue is commonly listed at 70,240.
The same building serves two home schedules, but capacity does not change by team. Ticket inventory can differ because each club controls its own standing areas, sponsor allocations, suites and seats held back for operations.
SoFi opened in 2020 and hosted Super Bowl LVI in February 2022. A Super Bowl’s announced crowd should not be treated as a new permanent capacity: the NFL adds media compounds, hospitality and security space while also creating temporary inventory elsewhere.
How SoFi expands toward 100,000
SoFi’s official site says the stadium is expandable to 100,000. That does not mean 29,760 empty permanent seats are hidden behind a wall during every NFL game.
Expansion comes from an event-specific combination of temporary seating, standing or floor admission and sections that a different production can make sellable. Whether the building approaches its ceiling depends on sightlines, exits, fire and safety approvals, field space, camera positions and the size of the event platform.
The 100,000 figure is a design maximum, not a promise that a particular Super Bowl, concert or soccer game will offer that many tickets. Confusing expandable and regular capacity is the main reason SoFi numbers look inconsistent across search results.
SoFi Stadium concert capacity
There is no single concert capacity. The production determines how much of the bowl and field can be sold.
| Concert layout | Effect on capacity |
|---|---|
| End stage | Blocks seats behind and beside the stage; usually lowers capacity |
| Center or in-the-round stage | Opens most of the bowl and may create a very large audience |
| Reserved floor seats | Adds inventory but leaves aisles and production space |
| General-admission floor | Can admit more people, subject to safety limits |
| Large runways and technical towers | Remove otherwise usable floor and bowl sightlines |
Ed Sheeran’s 2023 in-the-round concert drew more than 80,000, illustrating how a floor-based layout can exceed the standard football capacity. A conventional end-stage show may sell substantially fewer seats even if it is a complete sellout.
“Sold out” therefore means all inventory released for that performance was sold. It does not mean the crowd matched SoFi’s theoretical 100,000 maximum.
SoFi Stadium capacity for the 2026 World Cup
FIFA used the neutral tournament name Los Angeles Stadium. Its venue profile listed 70,492, close to the normal football number, while the ticketing support page published a net capacity of 52,497 and warned that the figure could change with configuration.
The gap is mostly a matter of gross versus net capacity:
- Soccer needs a wider playing surface and safety run-off than American football.
- Lower-bowl corner sections were modified to fit the field.
- Broadcast cameras and commentary positions occupy seats.
- FIFA hospitality, team, security and technical areas are not public inventory.
- Segregation and sightline restrictions remove additional places from sale.
The stadium’s physical bowl did not shrink to 52,497. That was a tournament ticketing number after operational deductions. SoFi hosted eight World Cup matches, including US games and a quarterfinal, following a major field conversion.
Seating levels and sections
SoFi’s seating bowl is divided into multiple rings rather than one simple lower-and-upper deck. Section numbers can be grouped broadly as:
- 100 level: closest to the field, with lower-bowl sightlines.
- 200 level: club and premium-heavy inventory around the bowl.
- 300 and 400 levels: intermediate elevated sections and premium areas.
- 500 level: the highest general seating, with a full-field view.
- Suites and clubs: separate products with private or shared hospitality.
The official venue says SoFi contains more than 260 luxury suites and more than 13,000 premium seats. Because premium inventory forms such a large part of the building, two seats at a similar height may have different entrances, lounge access and pricing.
What are the best seats at SoFi Stadium?
“Best” depends on the event and budget. For football, seats near midfield in the lower or club levels provide the cleanest view of both end zones. Higher central sections cost less and make formations easier to read.
For a concert, start with the stage diagram rather than the football section map. A low seat behind an end stage can be worse than a higher seat facing it. Floor tickets offer proximity but may have flat sightlines, especially for shorter spectators.
The oval Infinity Screen helps from almost anywhere. Its double-sided design lets lower and upper sections see a display without relying on one face pointed toward the sidelines.
Accessible seating and reduced-mobility planning
Accessible locations are distributed across several levels and price categories. Companion-seat rules and availability are tied to the individual event, so buyers should use the live ticket map or the stadium’s accessibility service rather than assuming every wheelchair platform is released for every show.
SoFi is a large campus. Travel distance from parking, rideshare or transit to the correct entry can matter as much as the seat itself. Check the gate and level on the mobile ticket before arrival, and request mobility assistance in advance when needed.
How SoFi compares with other NFL stadiums
| Stadium | Standard capacity | Comparison with SoFi |
|---|---|---|
| MetLife Stadium | 82,500 | 12,260 more seats |
| AT&T Stadium | About 80,000 | Roughly 9,760 more regular seats |
| Lambeau Field | 81,441 | 11,201 more seats |
| Arrowhead Stadium | 76,416 | 6,176 more seats |
| SoFi Stadium | 70,240 | Baseline |
| Allegiant Stadium | 65,000 | 5,240 fewer seats |
SoFi is not the largest NFL stadium by seating capacity. The venue’s claim to be the NFL’s largest stadium refers to the extraordinary scale of its structure and site: the stadium covers about 3.1 million square feet beneath a canopy that also spans a plaza and the adjacent theater.
Its cost is the more decisive record. At roughly $5.5 billion, SoFi ranks first among the most expensive NFL stadiums and the most expensive stadiums worldwide.
SoFi Stadium capacity versus the Rose Bowl
The nearby Rose Bowl is normally listed above 89,000, so it has more permanent seats than SoFi’s standard 70,240. SoFi offers a roofed modern environment, far more premium inventory and the ability to change event layouts; the Rose Bowl is a vast historic open bowl.
Capacity alone did not determine the Los Angeles World Cup venue. FIFA selected SoFi and its newer operational infrastructure, then required a field conversion. The two Los Angeles-area grounds answer different event needs, as the Rose Bowl capacity guide explains through their football, soccer and concert layouts.
Why the stadium feels larger than 70,240
The seating bowl was excavated roughly 100 feet below grade to comply with airport-related height limits. Above it, the translucent canopy covers the stadium, American Airlines Plaza and the 6,000-seat YouTube Theater without functioning like a conventional sealed roof.
That combination creates a structure far bigger than the seat count suggests. More than 13,000 premium seats, hundreds of suites, wide concourses and extensive event space consume area that an older stadium might devote to additional rows.
For the clearest one-line answer, use 70,240 for normal football, check the event map for concerts, and treat 100,000 as an expandable ceiling rather than everyday capacity. More current venue comparisons are collected in the SportsLook stadiums hub.
Frequently asked questions
What is SoFi Stadium's seating capacity?+
The standard football capacity is generally listed as 70,240. SoFi Stadium's official site rounds that to approximately 70,000 and says the venue can expand to 100,000 for selected events.
Can SoFi Stadium really hold 100,000 people?+
It was designed to expand toward 100,000 using temporary and event-specific inventory. That is not its normal NFL seating capacity, and most events sell far fewer than 100,000 places.
How many people can attend a concert at SoFi Stadium?+
Concert capacity depends on the stage. An end-stage setup blocks seats, while an in-the-round stage can open more of the bowl and add floor admission. Some concerts have exceeded 80,000 attendees.
Why was SoFi Stadium's World Cup capacity lower?+
A wider soccer field, safety run-offs, broadcast platforms, hospitality and FIFA operational areas remove seats from sale. FIFA's net ticketing figure therefore did not represent the stadium's total permanent seats.
Which NFL teams play at SoFi Stadium?+
The Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers both play their home games there. It is one of two active NFL stadiums shared by two teams, alongside MetLife Stadium.
Is SoFi Stadium the largest NFL stadium?+
Not by standard seating. MetLife Stadium holds 82,500, well above SoFi's 70,240. SoFi's official description of the NFL's largest stadium refers to its enormous physical footprint, not the most regular seats.
