Melbourne Cup Tickets: Members First, Public Later

The Lexus Melbourne Cup is on Tuesday 3 November 2026 — about nine weeks away — and the general public sale has not opened yet.

VRC Members are already in. Everyone else waits for a sale the Victoria Racing Club opens closer to the event.

A third release model

This site has now documented three completely different ways a major event distributes tickets, and knowing which one you are dealing with is most of the battle.

For a ballot, speed is irrelevant — World Rugby has said so explicitly, as our guide to sports ticket ballots sets out. For the Kentucky Derby, speed is everything: it sold 2027 tickets at noon on a stated day in June 2026.

Melbourne is neither. Access is tiered by membership rather than rationed by luck or by clock speed, and the public window arrives close to the race rather than a year out.

That is genuinely good news for anyone reading this now. Almost every other major event on this site has already closed its public window for the next running. This one has not opened.

What is actually on sale

Three categories, and they are not variations of one product.

General Admission — entry to the course without an allocated seat.

Hill Stand Reserved Seat and Lawn Stand Reserved Seat — allocated seating with views over the finish and the city skyline.

Above those sit hospitality and marquee packages, sold separately.

The $199 pass almost nobody mentions

The most useful number on this page is not a Cup Day ticket price.

The Flemington Race Day Pass is priced at $199 and covers all four days of the 2026 Melbourne Cup Carnival plus other race days.

For anyone attending more than a single day, that is the cheapest legitimate route in by a wide margin — and it is a season pass rather than a resale product, so it carries none of the secondary-market risk that dominates our other ticket coverage.

By contrast, third-party Carnival travel packages have been advertised from $599 per person twin share. Those are operator packages including accommodation, not Victoria Racing Club ticket prices, and the two figures should never be compared directly.

The richest staying race in the world

The money on the track dwarfs the money at the gate.

The Victoria Racing Club raised the Cup to A$10 million, roughly ten times the Grand National’s entire fund, as our guide to horse racing prize money sets out. Royal Ascot’s 2026 meeting offered a record £10.65 million across 35 races — comparable to what Flemington puts on one.

A spectator can attend four days of it for $199.

What to do

1. Watch vrc.com.au for the general public on-sale announcement — it comes closer to the event.
2. If you are attending more than one day, price the Race Day Pass first. At $199 across four Carnival days it will usually beat single-day tickets.
3. Decide General Admission or reserved before the sale. Hill and Lawn Stand seats are a different product at a different price.
4. Treat travel packages as travel packages. A “from $599” figure includes accommodation and is not a ticket price.
5. Buy through the VRC. Everything else is an operator or a marketplace.

The $199 Flemington Race Day Pass covering all four Carnival days plus other race days is from the VRC’s Race Day Pass page. The “from $599 per person twin share” package figure is from Sportsnet Holidays, with additional package detail from Events Travel. The A$10 million prize fund and the winner’s approximate A$4.4 to A$4.5 million share are from our own horse racing prize money coverage.

Currency is not stated consistently across sources. The VRC prices in Australian dollars, so the $199 pass should be read as A$199; the $599 package figure comes from an international travel operator and its currency is not specified. We have quoted each as published rather than converting.

We have not published Cup Day face values, because the general public sale had not opened when this was written and the VRC quotes prices at the point of sale.
