Darts Prize Money: £5m, and £15,000 for Losing

The 2026 World Darts Championship paid out £5 million. Luke Littler took £1 million of it for beating Gian van Veen 7-1 in the final.

The more unusual number is £15,000 — the amount guaranteed to every one of the 128 entrants, including the 64 who lost their first match.

That reconciles exactly. It is our own arithmetic from the published stage payments, and the fact that it lands on £5,000,000 to the pound is a useful check that the figures circulating are the real ones.

The floor is the story

£960,000 — 19.2% of the entire prize fund — goes to players who won no matches.

Nearly a fifth of the money is committed before a competitive result exists. That is close to unheard of in individual sport.

Compare it with golf, where the Masters pays $25,000 to players who miss the cut and nothing at all to amateurs, as our guide to Masters prize money sets out. Missing the cut at Augusta covers expenses. Losing in round one at the darts pays £15,000, which is a meaningful sum for a player outside the elite.

The design intent is visible: a 128-player draw is only worth entering for the players ranked 60th to 128th if losing early is still worth the week. The guaranteed minimum is what makes the field that deep.

Twenty percent, twice

Here is a coincidence worth noticing.

The darts champion takes exactly 20% of the fund — £1 million of £5 million.

The Masters champion takes exactly 20% of the purse — $4.5 million of $22.5 million, a figure Augusta National moved to in 2025.

Two sports with nothing in common, no shared governing body and a tenfold difference in the size of the pot have independently settled on the same winner’s share. It suggests 20% is roughly where a sport lands when it wants a headline number for the champion without hollowing out the rest of the draw.

The darts champion earns twice what the Grand National winner earns, and the darts fund is five times the National’s entire pot — set out in our guide to horse racing prize money.

The most famous jumps race in the world pays less to win than a darts tournament. That is not a criticism of racing, where prize money is split among the connections rather than paid to one competitor. It is a measure of how far darts has moved.

Where it sits in world sport

Large by British standards, modest by global ones.

A single Champions League club receives €18.62 million for reaching the league phase, before playing a match — more than three times the entire darts fund, as our guide to Champions League prize money sets out. The Masters purse alone is around four times larger.

What darts has is the distribution. Very few sports pay every entrant, and almost none pay a fifth of the fund to the half of the field that loses first.
